As of May 1, 2021, CDC transitioned from monitoring all reported vaccine breakthrough cases to only hospitalized or fatal cases. Per CDC, the number of COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough infections reported to CDC likely are an undercount of all SARS-CoV-2 infections among fully vaccinated persons as National surveillance relies on passive and voluntary reporting, and data is not complete or representative of true infection spread.
As of July 12, 2021, CDC received reports from 48 U.S. states and territories of 5,492 patients with COVID-19 vaccine breakthrough infection who were hospitalized or died. 1063 vaccinated had died
